SPICE Convention Centre (GPS: 5.32985, 100.27965) is a convention centre in Bayan Baru, Penang. One of the main components of SPICE, it was created to turn Penang into a destination for international conventions. The convention centre has what is believed to be the first hybrid solar-powered convention centre in the world.
SPICE Convention Centre Grand Ballroom
The centrepiece of SPICE Convention Centre is a mammoth 48,000-square-foot subterranean, pillarless Grand Ballroom, which can be subdivided into Ballrooms 1, 2, 3 and 4. This huge convention hall can take 400 round banquet tables, or 8,000-seat attendees. There is a 20,000-square-foot Pre-Function Area in front of the Grand Ballroom. In the event of very big functions, this Pre-Function Area can accommodate 150 round banquet tables.
In addition to the ballrooms, the SPICE Convention Centre has four smaller meeting rooms and two VIP rooms. The convention centre offers full-day and half-day packages for meetings and conferences, with a choice of set menu or buffet for lunch and coffee breaks.

SPICE Convention Centre Iconic Roof
The entrance porch of SPICE Convention Centre has an iconic roof comprising 1,600 glass panels, each cut to a different size. There are 654 LED lights affixed there which are computer controlled. This lighting, which comes from Philips Malaysia, is the first time this type of lighting is used in Asia. The roof has a contour, so every piece of glass has to be cut to a different size to fit exactly. To ensure that the glass is not plugged out by the wind, they tested it on a model in Melbourne.

Setia SPICE Roof Park and Bamboo Garden
The 2.4-hectare SPICE Convention Centre Landscaped Rooftop Park is possibly the biggest rooftop garden in the country. It is built to ensure that there is ample greenery for the general public in the rapidly developing Bayan Baru. The park replaces the paved area in front of the former PISA, and is now a much greener space than before.
The main portion of the rooftop park it is a well-tended lawn, while on the side, there is a gamboo garden with various types of bamboo including the Green Bamboo (Sinobambusa tootsik albostriata), the Yellow Bamboo (Phyllostachys sculphurea), Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) and North Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia sisso).1. There is also a playground for special-needs children which according to the developer, is the largest such playground in the country.

Before SPICE Convention Centre
Before SPICE Convention Centre was built, the area was a large open space in front of the main arena of the Penang International Sports Arena, PISA. It comprises a series of steps leading towards the indoor stadium, and is often used by the locals for jogging and other sports activities. When SPICE Convention Centre was conceived, an agreement was made to ensure that a green open space is retained for the enjoyment of the public, and this is now placed on the rooftop of the convention centre.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
