Pulau Berhala (GPS: 5.86928, 118.14508), or Berhala Island, is the island at the entrance to Sandakan Bay in Sabah. This forested island measures 5 hectares in size and is a habitat for birds especially raptors such as the Brahminy kites, serpent eagles and sea eagles.

Before the Second World War, Berhala Island used to be a quarantine station for immigrants from China and the Philippines. During the Second World War, it was used as a prison camp. Among those who were imprisoned here included novelist Agnes Keith and her husband Harry Keith. It has a lighthouse built in 1951 and managed by the Marine Department of Sabah.

Today Pulau Berhala is being develop for tourism, particularly for visitors to Sandakan. It has a sheer cliff that rises out of the sea, and a strip of white sandy beach ideal for picnic and snorkelling.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
