Malé is the capital and main city in Maldives. Formerly a walled city during the medieval period, the modern city of Malé today fully occupies the island of Malé, which is at the southern part of the Kaafu Atoll. It covers only 5.789 sq km (2.235 sq mi) and has a population of 104,000 people (2012 estimate). It is the fourth most densely populated island in the world, with a population density of 47,416 person per square kilomter.
The name Malé comes from the Sanskrit word maha that means big or great. It is from Malé that we get the name Maldives, meaning "island of Malé". The city experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. The wet season is from May through December while the dry season covers the remaining months. Temperature is quite uniform, with an average low of 27°C (81°F) and a high of 30°C (86°F).
The city of Malé occupies the island proper as well as the island of Vilingili and the artificial island of Hulhumalé. The airport is part of Hulhumalé Island.
Visiting Malé
The Malé International Airport (MLE) on the island of Hulhulé is the gateway to the country. From the airport, you can take a ferry to Malé.
Let me take you to explore and discover Penang through my series of walking tours on YouTube. You may use these videos as your virtual tour guide. At the beginning of each video, I provide the starting point coordinates which you may key into your GPS, Google Maps or Waze, to be navigated to where I start the walk, and use the video as your virtual tour guide.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
