Malé is the capital and main city in Maldives. Formerly a walled city during the medieval period, the modern city of Malé today fully occupies the island of Malé, which is at the southern part of the Kaafu Atoll. It covers only 5.789 sq km (2.235 sq mi) and has a population of 104,000 people (2012 estimate). It is the fourth most densely populated island in the world, with a population density of 47,416 person per square kilomter.

The name Malé comes from the Sanskrit word maha that means big or great. It is from Malé that we get the name Maldives, meaning "island of Malé". The city experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. The wet season is from May through December while the dry season covers the remaining months. Temperature is quite uniform, with an average low of 27°C (81°F) and a high of 30°C (86°F).

The city of Malé occupies the island proper as well as the island of Vilingili and the artificial island of Hulhumalé. The airport is part of Hulhumalé Island.

The Malé International Airport (MLE) on the island of Hulhulé is the gateway to the country. From the airport, you can take a ferry to Malé.
