Faisalabad (Urdu: فیصل آباد) is the third biggest city in
Pakistan after
Karachi and
Lahore. The city covers 1,280 sq km and has a population of 4.2 million people, within a 5,856 sq km (2,261 sq mi) metropolitan area with 5 million inhabitants.
Until the late 19th century, Faisalabad was nothing by a semi-desert area. Its distance from any rivers made irrigation difficult. The modern city was established in the 1870s when Captain Poham Young proposed its establishment. Canals were built to irrigate the area, enabling crops to be grown for the European market. At the turn of the 20th century its population was less than four thousand people.
Faisalabad was known by various named through its relatively short history. Originally it was called Chenab Colony. Then it was renamed Sandalbar, and then for much of its history, as Lyallpur. It was renamed Faisalabad only in 1977, in honor of the late King Faisal of Saudi Arabia.
As Faisalabad began as an agricultural city, and later on an industrial hub, it has much fewer tourist attractions if compared with Lahore or Karachi.
