Gujranwala گوجرانوالہ

Gujranwala (Pubjabi/Urdu: گوجرانوالہ), the 7th largest city in Pakistan, is an industrial city on the northeastern part of the province of Punjab. It covers 3,198 sq km (1,235 sq mi) and has a population of 2.67 million people (2012 estimate).

As with many of the major cities in Pakistan, Gujranwala traces its history back thousands of years. The famous Chinese Buddhist pilgrim Hsuan Tsang is documented to have passed through it in AD 630. As with elsewhere in Pubjab, it was ruled by the Mughal Empire. In 1707, following the death of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir, the city came under the Sikh Empire. It was eventually annexed by the British Empire in 1849.

Gujranwala industrialized rapidly following the creation of Pakistan in 1947. Today it is the third biggest economic center in the province after Lahore and Faisalabad.
