Muzaffarabad (Urdu: مظفر آباد, Pashto/Hindko/Pahari-Potwari: مُظفٌر آباد) is a city in northern Pakistan. It serves as the capital of Azad Kashmir. The city on the Jhelum and Neelum rivers covers 6,117 sq km (2,362 sq mi) and is at an elevation of 3,000 m (10,000 ft) above sea level. The population today is around 730,000 people (2012 estimate).
There is documented evidence of human habitation in the Muzaffarabad area going back to the 7th century AD, when the famous Buddhist pilgrim Hieun Tsang visited it. The modern city was named after the 13th century ruler of the Bomba Dynasty, Sultan Muzaffar Khan.
Muzaffarabad was severely devastated by the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, as the epicenter of the 7.6 magnitude quake is within the city. It destroyed half of all the buildings in the city including most of the government buildings, and killed up to 80,000 people.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
