Muzaffarabad (Urdu: مظفر آباد, Pashto/Hindko/Pahari-Potwari: مُظفٌر آباد) is a city in northern
Pakistan. It serves as the capital of Azad Kashmir. The city on the Jhelum and Neelum rivers covers 6,117 sq km (2,362 sq mi) and is at an elevation of 3,000 m (10,000 ft) above sea level. The population today is around 730,000 people (2012 estimate).
There is documented evidence of human habitation in the Muzaffarabad area going back to the 7th century AD, when the famous Buddhist pilgrim Hieun Tsang visited it. The modern city was named after the 13th century ruler of the Bomba Dynasty, Sultan Muzaffar Khan.
Muzaffarabad was severely devastated by the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, as the epicenter of the 7.6 magnitude quake is within the city. It destroyed half of all the buildings in the city including most of the government buildings, and killed up to 80,000 people.
