Manama was developed rapidly in the last two decades of the 20th century, spurred by oil wealth. The city has diversified its economy away from petroleum into other industries, and gearing itself to become a financial hub of the Middle East. At the same time, while petroleum is still a major part of the economy, it has declined in importance due to depleting reserves.

Visiting Manama
The Bahrain International Airport (BAH) is located in Muharraq, about 12 km from Manama. Your option for going from the airport to your hotel is mostly likely by taxi, which is not at all cheap but a lot more reliable than attempting to take the bus.
