Bak Kua (9 December 2012)

Bak Kua (Penang Hokkien: Bak1 Kua1 [baʔ-kuã]), variously translated as dried meat square, grilled Chinese pork jerky, barbequed meat slices, and the like, are tasty meat snacks taken on their own or sandwiched in buns. To bring out the taste, grill the bak kua until slightly charred (and banish all the health conscious from your kitchen).

The problem with bak kua is that it can be quite addictive - without realising it, a whole box of bak kua can disappear into our mouth within one sitting, without our realising it at the point of eating, only to feel too full afterwards.

Probably the most renowned brand of Bak Kua is Bee Cheng Hiang, a company that started in Singapore in 1933, and now has a four outlets in Penang, shown on this list of Bee Cheng Hiang outlets.
