Balik Pulau Roundabout (23 October 2021)
Balik Pulau Roundabout (GPS: 5.35067, 100.23482) is a landmark of
Balik Pulau town. The roundabout is where three main roads of the town converge. The three roads are Jalan Besar, also known as Main Road; Jalan Sungai Pinang, which leads off on a northwest direction; and Jalan Genting, going south towards the village of the same name.
In the middle of the roundabout is a monument. It was erected by Koh Seang Tatt, who also donated the
Municipal Fountain to George Town. The monument was in commemoration of the visit of
Sir Frederick Weld, who was
Governor of the Straits Settlement between 1880 and 1887. The monument comprises two lion heads with are water spouts supplying fresh water to the people of the village. There used to be a wind vane at the top of the monument which is now sadly missing.
The Balik Pulau Roundabout underwent a RM500,000 facelift with funding from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture as it is a Category 1 monument. Restoration work commenced on 1 December 2020 and was completed on 30 April 2021. The restoration brought the monument out of the grounds where it had been half buried from years of road resurfacing. The lion head waterspouts were repaired and are again in working order. At time of photography (Oct 2021), the weather vane on top of the monument was missing, so it is uncertain whether it is still under restoration.
