Bayan Mutiara, Penang (20 September 2009)
Bayan Mutiara (GPS: 5.35025, 100.31338) is a neighbourhood being developed on the eastern coast of
Penang Island. It is located on reclaimed land to the east of
Pantai Jerejak, to the north of
Queensbay, and to the south of
Gelugor.
Bayan Mutiara was originally intended to house Penang's new state administration. However the plans have very much been deflated, by the lack of funds, by all-round criticism from many quarters for the extravagance, and by the change in state governments. The land is now being planned for residential development by PDC Properties, the property development arm of state-government-owned Penang Development Corporation. However, the choice of an exclusive neighbourhood called
D'Residence at Bayan Mutiara is seen as an erosion of PDC's responsibility to provide affordable housing facilities to the residents of Penang.
