Beginning of the World is a spot by the sea off Penang Island. It is located at the tip of a promontory in
Batu Maung. The spot got the name "Beginning of the World" for a couple of reasons.
The Beginning of the World is taken as the first place that gets the sun every morning. This is not entirely true, as the tip of George Town probably gets the sun even earlier, but that's the reasoning.
The second reason is that Beginning of the World marks the beginning of the urban part of Penang. This ties well with another spot in Penang known as the
End of the World. The area in Penang where most urbanized Penangites live - hence their "World" - is between these two spots.
There was an offshore seafood restaurant at the Beginning of the World which operated for a number of years.
How to reach the Beginning of the World
Take
Rapid Penang bus
302 to the Batu Maung village. From the bus stop, walk down the old Batu Maung Road, with the fishing wharves to your left. The hill climbs a slope where at the bottom is the
