Berapit Chinese Cemetery (22 August 2015)
Berapit Chinese Cemetery (GPS: 5.38837, 100.48796) is one of the biggest cemeteries in Penang. It is known in Chinese as 福德正神墓園 (Mandarin: Fú Dé Zhèng Shén Mùyuán,
Penang Hokkien: Hock1 Teik1 Ceng1 Sin3 Bong33hnui2, English: "Cemetery of the Right God of Blessing and Virtue"). The name is in reference to
Tudigong 土地公, commonly known locally as Tua Pek Kong 大伯公, the tutelary deity of Chinese folk religion that is worshipped before the burial, to usher the deceased into his care.
Berapit Chinese Cemetery is located on both sides of Jalan Berapit, in
Berapit,
Bukit Mertajam, though the main portion is on the north side of the road. It includes a funeral parlour, a crematorium, the Tua Pek Kong funerary temple, and a multi-storey columbarium (which at time of writing, August 2015), is nearing completion.
Visitors to the Berapit Chinese Cemetery pass through an old archway. A new grand archway has also been erected facing the new access driveway.
