This Jelutong Market Lor Mee (GPS: 5.39017, 100.31241) is my favourite Lor Mee in Penang. I have searched and tried many lor mee stalls, some very famous, but in the end, it's this humble, unknown stall that gets my vote as my favourite. I have been coming here since at least 2012 or even earlier (can't remember when was the first time).

This is a lor mee stall at Jelutong Market, along Ipoh Lane, across the road from the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. Note, there are many lor mee stalls at the Jelutong Market, so you must track down the right one. The others is only so so.

My favourite lor mee stall is located on a small section of Ipoh Lane, across the road from the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. The seller is a lady. She is assisted in serving by a man whom I believe is her husband.

I like this Lor Mee very much because it is very tasty and rich in ingredients, or as we say in local parlance, "ho1 liau3". I usually order the "big" plate, which costs only RM3.50 (as of September 2012). It comes with several pieces of chicken feet, herbal egg, pork skin, offal and garlic sauce. The portion is big when judging from the price.

Update on my favourite Jelutong Market Lor Mee

Since late 2018, I visited the spot of my favourite lor mee, but always saw that it was not selling. Then word came to me from the neighbouring hawkers that the lor mee seller had an accident. I was very sad to hear that, but there was nothing I could do. For much of 2019, I visited the spot regularly, but saw that my favourite lor mee wasn't selling. Of course I missed it very much.

It was only in August 2019, during a trip to Jelutong Market that I bumped into the lor mee seller. I learned from him that he and his wife had an accident where an elderly man lost control of his motorcycle and ran into them. They were both badly injured and couldn't sell for so long. But on that day, they have already started selling for a few weeks. I didn't know, having not returned to the spot where they have their cart.

After a wait of almost a year, I had a chance to enjoy my favourite lor mee again. The price is now RM4.50 per plate, but I enjoyed it very much nonetheless. Yes, it remains my favourite lor mee.

Getting there

There are many stalls selling lor mee at the Jelutong Market area, but to try the one that is my favourite, from Jalan Jelutong, go along Penaga Road until it intersects with Ipoh Lane. Turn right, go a short distance along Ipoh Lane and you will see the lor mee stall on your right, by the road side, just before you reach the Sri Veeramakaliamman Hindu Temple on the left. The stall operates every morning (it does not have a planned off day) as long as the market is in session.

Other Lor Mee stalls in Jelutong and elsewhere on Penang Island

In Jelutong itself are a number of Lor Mee stall. There is a famous stall at Joo Huat Restaurant along Perak Road. I used to patronise that stall quite often before I discovered the stall at the Jelutong Market. Now I feel the one at Jelutong Market is better.

In George Town, probably the most popular Lor Mee stall is across the road from Kuan Im Teng, the Temple of the Goddess of Mercy, on Pitt Street. I simply call that stall the "Kuan Im Teng Hai Beng Lor Mee", because Hai Beng is the name of the coffee shop. The coffee shop is across Stewart Lane from the Kuan Im Teng temple. The taste of the Lor Mee here is not bad, but the portion is rather small. It doesn't have much ingredients, and it is not cheap either. Also, there is no braised chicken feet. I remember not feeling full after taking the big bowl.

That Lor Mee stall also has a branch in Pulau Tikus. The coffee shop is also called Hai Beng. It is at the junction of Burmah Road with Jones Road. The taste and price is similar to the one at Stewart Lane. Whenever I go to this coffee shop in Pulau Tikus, I take the Kuantan Road Curry Mee or the Nasi Campur Wati. Both are quite good.

So all things considered, I choose the stall stall at Jelutong Market as the one deserving the title of Best Lor Mee in Penang. You will see that I usually choose unsung hawker stalls that have remained largely undiscovered. I feel it is in such stalls that fame haven't gone to the hawker's head, the price is still low, and the hawker feels the necessity to upkeep his quality. For that reason, I am sometimes reluctant to recommend my favourite stalls, for fear that doing so will spoil the taste and price in the future.
