Bhaktivedanta Cultural Centre (Hare Krishna Temple) (29 January 2009)


Bhaktivedanta Cultural Centre (GPS: 6.435766, 100.190755) is a centre for the followers of Hare Krishna located in Seberang Jaya, Penang. It is at Plot 10, Lorong Jelawat 4, Seberang Jaya, 13700 Perai. The centre undertakes a variety of social welfare activities such as Food-for-Life distribution programmes as well as carry out religious services. Within the premises is the Bhaktivedanta Multi-Purpose Hall, a 5,000-square-foot hall for the staging of cultural performances.

The Hare Krishna movement is known as the International Society of Krishna Consciousness, an organisation founded in 1966 to spread the practise of bhakti yoga (devotion to god). Aspirant devotees, called Bhakta(s) dedicate their thoughts and action towards pleasing Krishna, their supreme lord, which the devotees regarded as non-different from God. The Bhaktivedanta Cultural Centre of Seberang Jaya is one of about 400 such centres around the world.

In front of the Bhaktivedanta Cultural Centre is the Hare Krishna Temple, to be known officially as Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple of Devotion & Understanding. Originally planned to cost RM12 million, the temple was eventually completed at a cost of RM7 million and opens on 29 August, 2015.

Getting there

The Bhaktivedanta Cultural Centre is located along Lorong Jelawat 4, which is best access by car. From the Butterworth Kulim Expressway, turn left into Jalan Todak with Sunway Carnival Mall on your left. Lorong Jelawat 4 is the junction to the right. After turning in, you will find Bhaktivedanta Cultural Centre to your left, after Sri Bala Murugan Temple and Ku Cheng Tse Temple.

If you need to rely on public transport, Rapid Penang Bus Nos. T703 goes to Sunway Carnival Mall nearby.

29 July, 2012 Hindu devotees are upset over a plan to construct a Chinese funeral parlour in the vicinity of the Hare Krishna Temple.
