Punakha is the administrative center of Punakha district in
Bhutan. It was only the old capital of the country until 1955, when the capital was moved to Thimphu.
Punakha is located about 72 km from Thimphu, and can be reached by road in about 2 1/2 hours. Located about 1,200 meters above sea level, Punakha is generally warmer than Thimphu. It is near to two of Bhutan's main rivers, the Pho Chu and the Mo Chu. The people here are mostly rice farmers.
Getting to and around Punakha
You can reach Punakha by bus or by hiring a taxi. There are shared taxis between Thimphu and Kuruthang, the stop just outside Punakha. The fare per person in a shared taxi is around 150 nu.
The town center itself is small enough for you to explore on foot.
