Black Thorn DurianBlack Thorn Durian (15 July 2018)

Black Thorn Durian is presently the king of durians. This is the most expensive durian in Malaysia. As of July 2018, it is selling at RM80 per kilogram, and a moderate size fruit can be about 4kg. For sure I have never eaten this durian until today, 14 July, 2018, when I finally get the pleasure of trying it, during Lindsay Gasik's Durian Appreciation Event.

By my own description, the Black Thorn is melon shaped. It is easy to identify it, and differentiate it from say another famous durian, the Musang King. The flesh is orangy and smooth. This is the first time I have ever tasted this expensive durian, and I can say that it is truly delicious.

During our Durian Appreciation Event at Karuna Hills, Balik Pulau, Mr Heng Mee Oo of Serene Orchard was on hand to share with us how to identify and appreciate the Black Thorn. I will put up the video soon. Until then, you can also learn to appreciate the black thorn durian from Lindsay Gasik's book, The Durian Tourist's Guide to Penang.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
