"Born Novelist" Sculpture, Lumut Lane

Born Novelist Sculpture, Lumut Lane, George Town, Penang (12 May 2013)

The "Born Novelist" Sculpture is a steel-rod sculpture in Lumut Lane, George Town. It is installed on the wall of a shophouse at the corner where Lumut Lane makes a perpendicular bend.

The "Born Novelist" sculpture celebrates Ahmad Rashid Talu (1889-1939), the first author to write an original Malay novel using local setting and characters. Most of his works were written in the 1920s and were published by the Malay publisher along Acheen Street.

In the sculpture, cartoonist Mun Kian depicts Ahmad Rashid Talu as being so prolific, he had begun writing even when he was still in his cot, to the amazement of his mother.
