Buddhist Tzu Chi Merit Society (2 December 2008)

The Buddhist Tzu Chi Merit Society (GPS: 5.42289, 100.31147) is a non-profit organization that is well noted for providing emergency relief, community services and medical care wherever the need arises. In Penang, the Tzu Chi Malaysia Liaison Office, which was set up in 1993, is housed in its newly completed premises at Macalister Road, between Bell Lane and Bell Close. The massive building is finished in grey granite and also houses the Jing Shi Tang Buddhist Temple.

The Penang Buddhist Tzu Chi Merit Society is part of the international Buddhist Compassionate Relief Tzu Chi Foundation which was founded in Taiwan in 1966. It is one of the largest Buddhist organisations in Taiwan. From just a group of thirty housewives who pooled their money to work for Buddhism, the organisation has grown to a 10 million strong membership today.

Among the relief work that the Tzu Chi Merit Society had undertaken in recent years included granting assistance to the tsunami-stricken villages in southwest Penang. It was also involved in offering aid to victims of the 2008 earthquake which hit Sichuan province in China, one of the few instances where a Taiwan-based organisation was allowed into China.
