Burmah Lane, George Town, Penang (29 December 2018)
Burmah Lane
is a minor road in the
Pulau Tikus district of
George Town, Penang. It runs from
Burmah Road to
Gurney Drive.
Kelawei Road intersects Burmah Lane into two section.
The section of Burmah Lane between Burmah Road and Kelawei Road is probably the most well-known among tourists, for this is the location of the two big Buddhist temples, the
Thai Wat Chaiyamangkalaram and the
Burmese Dhammikarama. These temples are sited on land that formerly included Thai and Burmese settlements. You can still see some old houses belonging to the Thai village within the compound of Wat Chaiyamangkalaram.
The section of Burmah Lane between Kelawei Road and Gurney Drive was until the 1930's a mere sandy path towards the beach. After Gurney Drive was developed, the extension of Burmah Lane was made into a proper road. Today it is one of the quieter stretched of minor roads in the Pulau Tikus area. Among the sites here includes Tenby International School and Serene Apartment.
The first prime minister of Siam,
Phraya Manopakorn Nititada, lived for a while in a bungalow along
Burmah Lane. The bungalow was demolished in November 2011, along with the former campus of
Tenby International School, to make way for the
Setia V Residences project.
