Sihanoukville is a port city in
Cambodia. It faces the Gulf of Thailand, and is some 185 kilometers (115 miles) to the southwest of Phnom Penh. Sihanoukville is also known by its original name, Kompong Som, but was renamed in honour of King Father Norodom Sihanouk.
The town of Kompong Som itself grew around Sihanoukville Port, which was contructed in June 1955 when hostility of Vietnam towards the French made river access through the Mekong Delta restricted for Cambodia.
Sihanoukville is being positioned as a beach destination. It has a number of beaches which are quite laidback compared to the more aggressively commercial ones in neighbouring Thailand. In addition, the city has drawn investors to a number of industries including textile and real estate.
