Cantonment Road, Pulau Tikus, Penang (6 November 2019)
Jalan Cantonment, formerly known as
Cantonment Road, is a road in the
Pulau Tikus district of George Town. It began at
Jalan Macalister and ends at
Persiaran Gurney. Cantonment Road intersects with two major roads running out of
George Town namely
Jalan Burma and
Jalan Kelawai. It is named after the army cantonment that used to be located there.
The Penang Malay Association or Persatuan Melayu Pulau Pinang (acronym Pemenang), an organisation founded in 1927, bought a building along the stretch of Cantonment Road between Kelawai Road and Gurney Drive (often called Cantonment Road Ghaut, as it is an extension of the original Cantonment Road) at RM600,000. Later, they sought for the road to be named Jalan Pemenang, after the association.
Among the roads that form junctions or intersections with Cantonment Road include
Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman,
Jalan Bell,
Jalan Biggs,
Jalan D.S. Ramanathan,
Persiaran Cantonment,
Jalan Yeoh Guan Seok,
Jalan Berjaya and
Jalan Pasar.
