Gat Lebuh Cecil, George Town (28 January 2013)
Gat Lebuh Cecil, originally Cecil Street Ghaut, is a major street in the
Macallum neighbourhood of
George Town, Penang. It is an extension of
Lebuh Cecil, but is located outside the
Seven Streets Precinct. Cecil Street begins at the intersection with
Bridge Street. The houses within a hundred meters from the Jalan CY Choy junction dates from the pre-war period. There is a lovely ensemble of Straits Eclectic-style townhouses on this stretch. Until the 1970s, Gat Lebuh Cecil beyond that point was a semi-swampy area.
Since the 1980s, land reclaimation has extended the shoreline outward. By the early 1990s, urban development began in the extended Gat Lebuh Cecil. Along with
Gat Lebuh Macallum, it became a main road into the Macallum neighbourhood.
As with the original Lebuh Cecil within the Seven Street Precinct, the Macallum neighbourhood is also a working-class area. It is densely populated, with quite a number of high-rise low-cost apartments. There is also a school here, a kindergarten, and many Chinese temples. The completion of the
Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway through the area at the turn of the 21st century helped to improve the infrastructure into the area.
Getting there by public transport
