San Kiang Cemetery, Batu Uban, Penang (3 September 2020)


San Kiang Cemetery (GPS: 5.3461, 100.30409) is a Chinese cemetery in the Batu Uban neighbourhood of Gelugor, Penang. It occupies Lot 146 and 10371 (formerly 147) of Mukim 13, Daerah Timor Laut. The cemetery belongs to the Penang San Kiang Association, a Chinese clan association which has its clan office at Lorong Macalister.

According to information gathered, the San Kiang Cemetery dates back to at least 1951, if not earlier, when Lot 146 was no longer big enough and so the adjacent Lot 147 was also purchased through funding received from various benefactors. Once located in a very rural part of Penang, the cemetery is today hemmed in by high-rise apartments and the Century Garden housing estate.
