Chee Cheong Fun (1 May 2008)

The Penang Chee Cheong Fun (豬腸粉), also written Chee Cheong Fan, a popular Penang hawker food of steamed flat rice noodle rolls. This is a Cantonese dish that originated from Southern China and Hong Kong - the chee-cheong-fun Chee Cheong Fun comes from Cantonese; the name translated literally means "pig intestine noodle" - not the most appetizing picture to the mind, but it is from this appearance that the dish acquired its name.

Penang has its own version of Chee Cheong Fun which is different from what you would get elsewhere in Malaysia. Unlike the Hong Kong style, which is often freshly made and stuffed with prawns, the Penang hawker version of Chee Cheong Fun is kept at a ready in a steamer. It is served with condiments such as the thnee cheo (a sweet dark-red sauce), hae ko (black, prawn paste sauce), huan cheo chiau (chili sauce), oil, and sprinkled with sesame seeds, but other than these, it is devoid of any accompaniments which you would get with Chee Cheong Fun elsewhere in the country. Puritan Penangites swear that this is the way to enjoy Chee Cheong Fun.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
