Chiat Cheong, Acheen Street, Penang (15 September 2012)

Chiat Cheong (GPS: 5.41521, 100.3358) is a dealer in dataprint computer supplies located at 145 Acheen Street, in George Town, Penang. It is housed in a stately double-storey shophouse that was built in the late 19th century by Baba Kean (real name Chong Cheng Kean). It is an example of the elite shophouse that was built by the many newly rich of the late 19th century.

Although this might not be apparent from street level, Chiat Cheong is a very long building. In fact it is one of the longest and largest shophouse building in George Town. It has two central air wells, and stretches back almost as far as the end of nearby Lumut Lane. The shophouses along that lane have their backyard facing the side of the Chiat Cheong building.

As with the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Centre, this building also once served as a location of the Penang Chinese Girls School, then known as the Fukien Girls' School.

In addition to its location on Acheen Street, Chiat Cheong also occupies a double-storey shophouse on Beach Street.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
