The Child at Prangin Canal Mural (GPS: 5.41156, 100.33407) is an engaging black-and-white mural by Russian artist Julia Volchkova. The Saint Petersburg-based artist specializes in mostly black-and-white murals. This is Volchkova's first mural in Penang. At time of writing (April 2014), she is planning another mural in George Town.

Julia Volchkova's Child Mural at Prangin Canal depicts a small boy who appears to be biting on the collor of his t-shirt. This is possibly based on a photograph, though it is not known where the photograph was shot.

A couple of months after Volchkova completed this mural, she was invited back to work on a second outdoor mural in George Town. Known as The Indian Boatman, it graces the sidewall of a house at 75, Stewart Lane. The mural faces Klang Street, at the junction with Stewart Lane.

Getting there

The Child Mural at Prangin Canal is located on the wall at the back of a shophouse facing Magazine Road Ghaut. The wall is beside an alley, immediately behind the Prangin Canal Hokkien Mee coffee shop, and a short walking distance from Wall Art Team's Penang Past, Present & Future Mural.

You can reach this mural by foot from the Komtar Bus Terminal. Walk heading south on Jalan Ria until junction to Magazine Road, then head west on Magazine Road until the intersection with Bridge Street (Jalan CY Choy). Continue on Magazine Road Ghaut, and you will see the mural on your left beside an alley.
