Tanzhe Temple is a huge temple complex in a mountainous setting, located some 28 miles (45 km) to the west of
Beijing. A temple called Jiafu Si has existed here since the 3rd century. The temple was renamed Tanzhe Temple after the nearby mountain, Tanzhe Shan, which itself was named after the nearby lake called Long Tan (Dragon pool) and Zhe (cudrania trees).
Tanzhe Temple is famous for its many ancient trees. A huge ginkgo tree within the temple compound was named the Emperor's Tree, while another tree close to it was named The Emperor's Wife.
Near the parking lot of Tanzhe Temple is a collection of shrines called Talin Si, or Stupa Forest Temple. Each stupa was built in memory of a renowned monk, a practice also common in other Buddhist countries. The oldest of these stupas date back to the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234).
How to reach Tanzhe Temple
