Yuanming Yuan, or Garden of Perfect Brightness, was a collection of gardens in Beijing. These were merged into one by the Qianlong emperor of the Qing Dynasty during the mid 18th century. The emperor commissioned the Jesuits to design for him a complex of European-style buildings for the gardens. The Jesuits created what they regarded as Beijing's response to Versailles.
What you can see today looks more like Beijing's response to Ancient Athens. Most of the buildings at Yuanming Yuan are now in ruins. The traditional Chinese structures were destroyed by British and French troops during the Seconde Opium War in 1860. The European-styled ones were pulled down by the locals who spirited the material away for their own use.
Apart from the jumble of marble blocks and stones, the rest of the garden comprises lakes, pavilions and walkways.
How to reach Yuanming Yuan
Take the subway to the Xizhi Men station, then take bus 375. The garden is open from 7:00 am to 6:30 pm daily.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
