Henan Province 河南省 is a province of the
People's Republic of China. It is located in the North China Plain. The name "Henan" means "south of the river" - the river in this case refers to the Huang He.
Henan Province covers an area of 167,000 sq km (64,000 sq mi). Out of the 22 provinces of China, Henan is the 17th largest province but in terms of population, it ranks a high second behind
Guangdong Province. Henan Province has a population of 95 million people (2011 estimate), more than many countries. In fact, if it were an independent country, it would be the 12th most populous in the world.

Henan Provinces shares a border with Hebei Province to the north, Shanxi Province to the northwest, Shaanxi Province to the west, Hubei Province to the south, Anhui Province to the east and Shandong Province to the northeast.
The capital of Henan Province is the city of Zhengzhou. It is also the largest city in Henan. The province is divided into 17 prefectures and further subdivided into 159 counties.
