Central is the financial, business and administrative heart of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. It is packed into a very narrow strip of land wedged in between the sea and the steep hills of Hong Kong Island. The southern part of Victoria Harbour is in Central. You can cross the harbour by ferry to Kowloon on the mainland. The journey takes just about ten minutes.
Central was originally known as Victoria. The name lives on today in the harbour, whereas the name "Central" has become the popular choice since the mid 20th century.
Central is certainly the most expensive real estate in Hong Kong. Many of the historic landmarks of the territory is also located here. It is a good place to sightsee and marvel at the many state-of-the-art skyscrapers soaring into the sky. The many shopping malls and banks in Central are interconnected by elevated walkways and escalators.
Most of the sights you will find in Central are modern, if not ultra-modern. Yet you will also discover historical gems here and there, colonial buildings and early 20th century bank buildings that have been readapted to other uses.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
