Sheung Wan 上環 is a downtown neighbourhood of Hong Kong Island. It is located on the northwestern part of Hong Kong Island, between Central and Sai Ying Pun, with Victoria Harbour to the north and Mid-levels to the south. It is on a higher elevation compared to the other two places.

Sheung Wan was one of the earliest places that the British settled upon colonizing Hong Kong Island. It was originally part of Victoria City, a name that is no longer popularly used, but denotes the area covering present-day Central and part of Sheung Wan. The earliest site of settlement is at presently Possession Street, when the British took possession of the island in 1842.

As with much of downtown Hong Kong, Sheung Wan is today a densely developed area. It has the typical Chinatown feel prevalent throughout the downtown part of Hong Kong.

How to go to Sheung Wan

The Sheung Wan area is served by the MTR Island Line. The Sheung Wan MTR Station is presently the western terminus of the line, until such time that the line is extended to Kennedy Town (scheduled for 2014 opening).
