The Longmen Grottoes in Henan Province, China, has one of the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art from the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316 to 907 AD). The artwork in the grottoes and niches represent a high point of Chinese stone carving.They were inscribed as World Heritage Sites during the 24th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in Cairns, Australia on 27 November to 2 December, 2000.
The Longmen Grottoes were inscribed under criteria i, ii and iii. The sculptures were regarded as "outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity" that played a highly significant role in the cultural evolution of that region in Asia. The sculptures are also celebrated as the encapsulation of the high cultural attainment and sophistication of Tang Dynasty China.

Visiting Longmen Grottoes
The Longmen Grottoes are near the city of Luoyang, which has flight connections with Beijing and Shanghai. The grottoes are about 10 km to the south of Luoyang. You can get there by bus or taxi, or arrange with a local tour agency.
