Fortaleza da Guia, Macau

Lighthouse at Fortaleza da Guia (10 November 2007)

Fortaleza da Guia, or Guia Fort, is a military complex consisting of a fort, a chapel and a lighthouse. It is located at Guia Hill, the highest peak in Macau peninsula. From the top, one can get great views of Macau.

Fortaleza da Guia was built in 1638 with the intention of defending the border between Macau and China, but given its location, it served a better purpose as an observation post. The fort is shaped like an irregular pentagon. The fortress lighthouse built in 1865 is now part of a park.

Of interest at the fort are the Sally Ports, small doors that leads to disconnected tunnels. The tunnels were used to store ammunition. You can also visit the charming little 17th century Chapel to Our Lady of Guia.

To get the best views from Fortaleza da Guia, look from the southeast down towards Porto Exterior, and westwards towards Fortaleza do Monte.
