Holy House of Mercy (8 November 2007)

The
Holy House of Mercy, or
Santa Casa de Misericórdia, is the oldest social institution in
Macau. It is one of the most prominent buildings at the Largo do Senado. The Holy House of Mercy was founded in 1569 by Dom Belchior Carneiro, the first Bishop of Macau, with the intention of doing charitable work for the local community, and in so doing, hoping to win some souls. The Holy House of Mercy was instrumental in establishing the first western-style hospital in Asia. The hospital, for treating victims of leprosy, was located in the St Lazarus district.
The Holy House of Mercy is housed in a white-washed neoclassical structure that takes a central space in the spacious Largo do Senado. Today it is a sort of museum. Among the items on display includes Dom Belchior Carneiro's skull.
