Scene of Lin Zexu receiving Portuguese and Macau officials, Lin Zexu Memorial Museum (10 November, 2007)
Lin Zexu Memorial Museum is a museum within the compound of Lin Fung Temple in
Macau. It was built in 1997 to commemorate Lin Zexu, a Chinese patriot from the 19th century.
Imperial Commissioner Lin Zexu is one of the Chinese officials, or mandarin, who visited Macau, staying at Lin Fung Temple whenever he came. This was also where he received Portuguese and Macau officials. He was instrumental in persuading the Portuguese to ban the sale of opium, and to observe a policy of neutrality in Sino-UK relations.
The Lin Zexu Memorial Museum was set up by the Lin Fung Temple Charitable Council. In 1989, the first of several statues of Lin Zexu in Macau and Hong Kong was erected.
