Lotus Bridge, also called Lotus Flower Bridge, is a bridge that links the island of
Taipa in
Macau with Zhuhai in mainland
China. The bridge is 1.78km long and 30 metres wide. It was built at a cost of RMB200 million, and completed in 1999. The bridge is just 10 minute from the
Macau International Airport. The opening of the Lotus Bridge reduces the load on the
Barrier Gate, which was previously the only border crossing between Macau and China.
Lotus Bridge has three lanes in each direction. The uniqueness of the bridge is that it has to facilitate the switching of traffic from left-side driving in Macau to right-side driving in China. It does this though an unusual arrangement that causes the ramps to loop over each other switching direction of the traffic in the process.
