Portas do Cerco (9 November 2007)

The
Barrier Gate or
Portas do Cerco is the gate that marks the border between
Macau and
mainland China. The name actually means "siege gate" though in English it is called
Barrier Gate.
Barrier Gate got its name from the gate that was constructed in 1574 by the government of China, to separate it from Macau. It comprises a three-storey Chinese-style gate tower with specific opening times, and located in what became Ferreira do Amaral Causeway. The old gate was demolished in 1871 and present Barrier Gates was rebuilt by the Portuguese Government.
Today there is a new border crossing with 54 counters for travelers and 8 for vehicular traffic. The place is surrounded by new high rise apartment block on either side.
