Sun Yat-sen Memorial House (10 November, 2007)
Sun Yat-sen Memorial House (GPS: 22.199896, 113.548914) is a house at Avenida de Sidonio Pais in
Macau. It was designed in a mock-Moorish style with wide verandahs and spacious courtyards. Formerly known as the Mansion of Sun, it was originally constructed in 1912, and rebuilt in 1933. It has been called the Sun Yat-sen Memorial House since 1958.
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial House was the home of Dr Sun's first wife, Lu Muzhen. It is located close to
Lou Lim Ieoc Garden, where Dr Sun used to stay. At that time, Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was known as Spring Herb Hall.
The occupants of the house included Lu Muzhen and the two daughters and one son fathered by Dr Sun, namely Sun Yan, Sun Wan and the son, Sun Ke. Lu Muzhen lived at the house for 40 years, until her passing on 7 September, 1952, at the age of 85. Two other occupants of the house were Dr Sun's elder brother Sun Mei and his wife. They moved to Macau in 1913, and lived in the house until Sun Mei's passing in 1915.
Dr. Sun Yat-sen has always been familiar with Macau. His father Sun Dacheng moved to Macau at the age of 16, and lived there for 16 years, where he worked as a cobbler, before moving back to his hometown, and got married to Lady Yang, who was Dr Sun's mother. Lady Yang brought Dr Sun to Macau for the first time when he was 13 years old.
After graduating with a medical degree from the Hong Kong College of Medicine, Dr Sun was invited by the Kiang Wu Hospital of Macau to found the Western Medicine Department, thereby becoming the first Chinese doctor to practice Western medicine in Macau.
