The Hongkong & Shanghai Bank Building is a historic building at the Bund area of Shanghai, China. This six-storey building, which today houses the Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, was the headquarters of the Shanghai branch of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation from 1923 to 1955.
The present HSBC China headquarters is not in the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Building. It is housed in the Shanghai International Financial Center Building, moving from Shanghai Sen Mao International Building, a 46-storey skyscraper in Pudong, in late 2010.
Construction of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Building began on 5 May, 1921 and the building was completed on 23 June 1923. It was acclaimed as one of the most beautiful buildings in Asia. With a floor area of 23,415 square meters, it was also the largest bank building in the Far East.
In front of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank building is a pair of lions. They are replicas belonging to the Pudong Development Bank. The original are now on display at the Shanghai Museum.
The inside of the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Building is a grand space finished in marble with vaulted ceiling decorated with delicate mosaic. The mosaic depicts major destination where the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation had its branches, namely Hong Kong, Shanghai, Tokyo, London, New York City, Bangkok, Paris and Calcutta.
How to reach the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank Building
There are surprisingly few subway stations along the Bund. Your only choice is to take the east-west Line 2 to the Nanjing East Road subway station. From there, walk eastwards along Nanjing East Road until you reach Zhongshan Dong Lu, the main thoroughfare on the Bund. Turn right and walk southwards down Zhongshan Dong Lu until you see the Shanghai Pudong Development Bank on your right.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
