People's Square is a large public square in Shanghai, China. It is located next to Nanjing Road, and includes People's Park, a large public park. Distances in Shanghai is measured from the Shanghai Municipal Government Building at People's Square.
People's Square was formerly the Shanghai Racecourse. The square was created in 1949 after the Communist government outlawed gambling and horse racing. Also created is People's Park, or Renmin Gong Yuan, a place where the people of Shanghai can go for walks or exercise.

Today People's Park and People's Square are bordered by new and gleaming skyscrapers. Within the park itself are noted landmarks including the Shanghai Municipal Government Building, the Shanghai Museum, the Shanghai Art Museum, the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall and the Shanghai Grand Theatre.
