Shanxi Province 山西省 is a province of the
People's Republic of China on the north-central part of the country. Its name means "mountain's west", in reference to the Taihang Mountains.
Shanxi Province is 156,800 sq km (60,500 sq mi) in size, placing it in the 19th spot out of the 22 provinces of China. The population of Shanxi Province, at 33.3 million people, is also in the 19th position. The provincial capital of Shanxi is the city of Taiyuan, which is also the biggest city in the province.

Shanxi Province is a landlocked province. It is bordered by Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to the north, Shaanxi Province to the west, Henan Province to the south and Hebei Province to the east.
Shanxi is divided into eleven prefectures, all of which are prefecture-level cities. They include Taiyuan, Changzhi, Datong, Jincheng, Jinzhong, Linfen, Lüliang, Shuozhou, Xinzhou, Yangquan and Yuncheng.
