Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries - Wolong, Mount Siguniang & Jiajin Mountains, China


The Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries covers an area of 924,500 hectares in seven nature reserves and nine scenic parks in the Qionglai and Jiajin Mountains in Sichuan Province, China. It includes Wolong National Nature Reserve and Mount Siguniang. Together, these protected nature sites account for 30% of the world's highly endangered panda population. These sanctuaries are the largest remaining contiguous habitat of the giant panda, an animal considered a relic of the paleo-tropical forests of the Tertiary Era.

In addition to the giant pands, the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries are also home to other endangered animals including the red panda, the snow leopard and the clouded leopard. In addition to the wildlife, the sanctuaries are among the botanically richest sites in the world outside the tropical rainforest, with between 5000 to 6000 species of plant life of over 1000 genera.

The Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries were inscribed as World Heritage Sites during the 30th session of the World Heritage Committee in Vilnius, Lithuania between 8-16 July, 2006.
