Wuhan (武汉) is the capital of Hubei Province, China. It is a city of 6.1 million people, within metropolitan area of over 9 million inhabitants. Wuhan is the transportation hub for the surrounding provinces with major expressways and railway lines passing through the city. The city is in fact the conglomeration of three boroughs, namely Wuchang, Hankou and Hanyang.
The area where Wuhan is located has been settled for over three thousand years. City walls were built to protect the settlements of Hanyang in AD 206 and Wuchang in AD 223. It was also in AD 223 that the historic Yellow Crane Tower was built on the Wuchang side of the Yangtze River, and that year is regarded as the year that Wuhan was established.
When the railway was built through Wuhan in the late 19th century, it became an important transshipment point. Pressure from foreign powers resulted in the riverfront of Hankou being divided to various foreign concessions.

The Wuchang Uprising of 1991, staged by the followers of Dr Sun Yat-sen, was instrumental in bringing down the Qing Dynasty and usher in the Republic of China. In the 1920's, Wuhan served as the capital of the leftist Kuomintang government led by Wang Jingwei, in opposition to Chiang Kai-shek.
Wuhan's location by the bank of the Yangtze River made it vulnerable to devastating floods throughout history. The completion of the mammoth Three Gorges Dam is hoped to end these calamities.
Planning your trip to Wuhan
By Plane
The Wuhan Tianhe International Airport is about an hour from downtown Wuhan. It receives regular scheduled flights from most of the major cities in China, as well as a few selected Asian cities.
By Train
There are overnight trains connecting Wuhan with Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, each taking between 9 to 12 hours. High speed trains make the same journey within 6 hours to Shanghai, 9 to Beijing and 4 to Guangzhou.
The bus system can be a perplexing thing to visitors, so your best best is probably to take a taxi. Otherwise, an even safer option is just to follow a local tour.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
