Chingay Procession Sculpture, Prangin Road Ghaut, George Town (30 March 2013)
"Chingay Procession" Sculpture (GPS: 5.41078, 100.335) a set of steel-rod art sculptures installed in
George Town, Penang. Comprising four separate sculptures, it was installed on the pilasters of a colonaded shophouse at the junction of
Prangin Road Ghaut and
Weld Quay. The sculpture is based on the caricature penned by
cartoonist Tang Mun Kian.
The Chingay Procession Sculpture depicts a surprising mix of characters performing chingay stunts as they parade down the street. Heading the procession was a Pubjabi man with the chingay flag on his head. He was followed by the second character balanced on a very tall unicycle. Behind him came his young son doing a handstand on his little bicycle with training wheels. And completing the procession was another man, an Indian man perhaps, attempting a hand stand, only to realise that his
sarong is falling over.

The "Chingay Procession" Sculpture celebrates chingay, a street performance art believed to have been born in Penang and was later adopted in other cities such as Singapore. Chingay is believed to have originated from the processions staged to celebrate the feast days of the Tua Pek Kong. For cross references, read also about
