Chulia Mansion Hotel (GPS: 5.418811, 100.334895) is a newly established three-star hotel on Chulia Street. It provides comfortable lodging in the heart of the city. Chulia Mansion is housed in a 5-storey modern building. Opened on 7 July, 2014, Chulia Mansion offers 49 rooms in five different room types, namely superior double, superior twin, deluxe double, deluxe twin and deluxe quad.
I reviewed on Chulia Mansion on 27 January, 2015. It was rather impromptu, as I happened to be in the area. If Chulia Mansion appeared familiar from the outside, that is because it used to house SAS Malaysia, a travel agency belonging to a friend. That agency has since relocated a few doors away.
I was pleasantly surprised to find the interior of Chulia Mansion Hotel to be very spacious (from the outside, I had half expected it to be dingy, but no it wasn't). The centrepiece of the lobby is an avant-garde triptych by imminent Malaysian artist Ismadi. The bold colours provide a striking contrast to the lobby area.

From the lobby, the manager took me upstairs to their cafeteria. The Chulia Mansion Cafeteria has a separate indoor and outdoor section. I am told that the hotel is one of the few in George Town where the cafeteria operates 24 hours a day. Guests can come in to enjoy beverages as well as food at any time. There is also a coffee maker for guests to enjoy freshly brewed coffee.
The outdoor section of the Chulia Mansion Cafeteria opens out to a deck with view of Chulia Street and the inner section of George Town. From here, you can view across the street to Yeng Keng Hotel, and farther on, to Muntri Street.

I find that the general landing area of Chulia Mansion Hotel to be spacious and very neatly done up. At the lift landing of each floor is an oil painting by Ismadi. The use of mirrored walls nicely enhances the space of the area. The manager also pointed out that the outer wall of the hotel has the largest street art in George Town. It was painted during the Urban Xchange street art festival in November, 2014.
As we went from the lobby to the lift landing, I noticed that the hotel has installed a ramp, for the convenience of those on wheelchair.

We took the lift right up to the 5th floor roof top. There is an open deck here where guests can enjoy splendid views of George Town. From here, you can see the city spread out below. For the convenience of the guests, there is a bar here for them to get some beverages and perhaps even some light snacks. At the time I visited, the hotel is doing limited time promotion on Moët & Chandon champagne at RM250 nett per bottle.

Next I went to inspect the room. There are three types of room available at Chulia Mansion: superior twin, superior double and deluxe twin.
I find that both room types are well furnished, clean and surprisingly spacious. I said surprisingly spacious because I had expected an inner city hotel room to be quite small. However, I found that there is good leg room around the beds, as you can see in my photographs.
I also made it a point to observe whether the rooms have any windows. Although some of the windows open to the side, and not directly over the beds, I can confirm that all the rooms I visited have windows. All rooms have flat-screen television sets and wifi connectivity.

This is the smallest of the rooms, as it has to accommodate two beds. Nevertheless I don't feel particularly cram inside it.

Deluxe Double Room, Chulia Mansion Hotel (pictured below)
This room is very spacious. Notice how much space there is around the bed? You can chuck your luggage anywhere. I do notice that there is no couch in the room, just a chair, which helps unclutter the space. The windows are to the side as you enter, not near the bed, so the room is slightly on the dark side if you pull the curtains.

This is a huge room that can fit a family of four. I see that it is bright and airy due to it having windows right over the beds. Although it has two king-size beds, there is still ample space around the room.

Having gone through Chulia Mansion Hotel, I can say it offers a very nice place to stay in the heart of Chulia Street. All the rooms, even the superior twin, are quite spacious.

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
