Church of the Nativity, Butterworth (1 May 2015)
Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (GPS: 5.39794, 100.37167) is a Roman Catholic church in
Butterworth,
Penang. Often known by its acronym N.B.V.M., the church is located along
Jalan New Ferry, in the Bagan Dalam neighbourhood of Butterworth.
The Church of the Nativity traces its beginnings to mission effort by Catholic priests visiting from the
Church of the Assumption on Penang Island. Father Adrien Devals and Father John Baptist Souhait were the early missionaries who came by boat from George Town to conduct regular services for the Catholic families there. Most of the believers were Indians, which formed a substantial population of Butterworth at that time.
The mission effort led to the construction of a chapel in 1937. The parish received its first resident priest, Father Louis Ashness, in 1945. Father Louis was instrumental in the founding of the Assumption School, known today as Sekolah Kebangsaan Assumption.
