About Clarke Street
Clarke Street was name after Sir Andrew Clarke (1824-1902), who served as the Governor of the Straits Settlements between 4 November 1873 and 7 May 1875. Clarke is best remembered as the governor who presided over the signing of the Treaty of Pangkor in 1874.
Clarke was generally popular with the local population, but had his reputation dented by the murder of J.W.W. Birch, the first Resident of Perak. In a way, he took the blame for not taking seriously the letter which Sultan Abdullah of Perak had sent him, complaining about Birch's rudeness against Malay rulers and customs. If he had acted on the complaint, the murder might not have taken place. For that reason, he chose to retire early. Nevertheless, his name is immortalized not only at Clarke Street in Penang, but also
Clarke Quay in Singapore.
