Clove (bunga cengkih)Clove (bunga cengkih) (27 October 2008)

Clove, or bunga cengkih, is the aromatic dried flower of the clove tree, Eugenia aromaticum. The tree is an evergreen that grows to a height of 10-20 meters. Indonesia is the biggest producer, accounting for some 80% of the cloves produced in the world.

Clove finds its way into all sorts of Nyonya food, particularly rice dishes such as briyani rice, (Indian origin) and tomato rice (of Malay origin). Although I like having clove in cooking, I cannot bear accidentally biting onto it, so each time I am told that there's clove in the food, I'd make sure I remove all the cloves before eating.

Outside the kitchen, clove is said to help in reducing the pain from toothache as well as cure acne.
