Convent Bukit Mertajam (17 July 2015)
Convent Bukit Mertajam (GPS: 5.35887, 100.46542) is a school in
Bukit Mertajam,
Seberang Perai Tengah. It comprises a kindergarten, a primary school and a secondary school. It is located on Jalan Kulim, at the junction with Lorong Usahaniaga4.
Convent Bukit Mertajam was established in 1924 by Catholic nun, The Very Reverend St Tarcisius, who was instrumental in founding many of the mission schools in Penang and Kedah. In recognition for the services rendered, Reverend Mother St. Tarcisius was awarded the Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) by King George V. She died at the age of 89 in 1964, and was buried at the
Cheras Catholic Cemetery.
Convent Bukit Mertajam was originally called St Marguerite's Convent, and classes were held at a rented house on Cross Street (present-day
Jalan Arumugam Pillai). It moved to its present location on Jalan Kulim in 1938. Classes had to be disbanded in 1941 due to the Second World War, and only resume the following year, when it was administered as a Japanese school.
The administration of Convent Bukit Mertajam was taken over by the government in 1946. A new school building was completed in 1954. In 1967, it was given the official name of Sekolah Menengah Convent Bukit Mertajam.
