Croisette Cafe is a now defunct French café in Tanjung Bungah, Penang. It is one of the few places in Penang that I know where you can get to enjoy authentic French cuisine in a homey setting. The cafe is housed in a double-storey semi-detached bungalow in Tanjung Bungah, a short walk from the seaside.

Our Visits to Croisette Cafe
1 May, 2015
Today Croisette Cafe celebrates its first anniversary in Penang, and my wife and I booked a table for ourselves to enjoy the anniversary lunch, which is at RM48 nett. We met up with a few friends who have also signed up for this anniversary lunch. For that price, we get the starters, followed by a choice of three main course dishes, and finished with the desserts and either tea or coffee.
The starters were a buffet spread that includes croissants, pain chocolat, toast bread, yogurt, cereals, omelette, scrambled eggs, sunny side eggs, mini quiche, various canapés, rotissaladière, rotizza Margherita, salad Mesclun, pumpkin soup and tomato soup. We just need to take whatever we want to eat, but need to spare our stomach for the main courses.
Here we are with Croisette Cafe owner Michelle Soon, who runs the cafe with her husband Pierre. (1 May 2015)
As we have a choice of 3 main course dishes per person, we decided to try all five items available. They are the bœuf bourguignon, pork chop, lamb tajine, seabass and pasta pistou. These are eaten with the side dishes including the roasted potatoes, couscous and ratatouille. For the dessert, there is all sorts of mini tartlets, creme brulée, brownie, and other sweet indulgences.
I particularly enjoyed the seabass and the lamb tajine. The pasta pistou, roasted potatoes and ratatouille are also very tasty. On the other hand, we found the bread for the canapé to be rather hard - I would prefer it to be less hard but just as crispy. But all in all my wife and I enjoyed our lunch very much, and look forward to coming back Croisette Cafe from time to time, to indulge in authentic French food.

23 November, 2014
On 23 November, 2014, my wife and I had the pleasure of being invited by its owners Pierre and Michelle to a luncheon. The couple started Croisette Cafe in September as both a café and a guesthouse called Croisette Villa, with four rooms done up in the French style, each carrying a different colour scheme and theme.
Pierre hails from the South of France, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, and he brought a touch of Provence to the deco of Croisette Cafe. Pierre andn Michelle named their place after Plage Croisette, the famous shoreline in Cannes, France.

Pierre and Michelle were such wonderful hosts. Although they were treated us to lunch on the house, they wanted us to choose anything we want from the menu. But as they are certainly more familiar with French cuisine than we are, we asked them to give us our best shot. And so, this was how our lunch menu appeared.
As a starter, we had prawn bisque. This is a luxurious seafood soup. Its ingredients include fresh prawns, wine, onions, tomatoes and saffron. I can smell the aroma of the prawns in the soup. To seek a local comparison, I have to say it kind of reminded me of good Hokkien Mee.
The prawn bisque is taken with rouille and crouton. The rouille is a creamy sauce made of olive oil, saffron and chili peppers. The right way to eat it was to float the crouton with rouille on the prawn bisque and let it sink down.

Next came the main course, or rather, three different main course for two people!
The first of these three is duck confit. This very French dish, a specialty of the Gascony area of southwest France, is a leg of duck resting on a bed of potatoes. The potatoes have been roasted in the duck fat, and is called pommes de terre à la sarladaise. The duck is truly delicious. The meat comes apart beautifully. We reminded ourselves to savor every mouthful slowly.

The second item presented to us was civet de porc or pork civet. This is a stew of pork in red wine, with onions, juniper, carrots and mushrooms. And topped with a bay leaf. This is as close to boeuf bourguignon as I could get. My wife was not used to the taste of wine in her food, but I like it.

The third item that Pierre and Michelle prepared for us was sea bass leek fondue. This is a chunk of fresh sea bass on a bed of creamy melted leek, a specialty of Croisette Cafe in Bangsar, which the couple is introducing to Penang.

By the time we demolished the three main dishes, we were already quite full, but we were told to leave room for the desserts, for Croisette Cafe is proud of its various desserts. As soon as the empty plates of the main dishes were taken away, we were served the dessert platter. It comprises three items: the Trio Choco Cake, Passion Indulgence and Gâteau fraisier
The Trio Choco Cake put me in chocolate heaven. This triple-layer dose of chocolates is the thing for chocolate lovers like me.

Next, there's the Passion Indulgence gets its name from the passion fruit, which forms the top layer over one of white chocolate and another of cocoa biscuit.

And finally, there's the Gâteau fraisier, or fraisier cake. This is a riot of strawberries. Served with a sprig of redcurrants, a Cape gooseberry and a strawberry, it was devilishly delicious!

By the time we finished our meal, we couldn't take anymore. Everything was so delicious, and I'm saying this not only because I'm getting free food. We thank Pierre and Michelle for the warm hospitality and giving us a taste of Provence, France in their cafe.
I am pleased to learn the Croisette Cafe has set lunches Tuesdays to Fridays (except public holidays) for just RM30 net. Served from 11:00 am in the morning to 3:00 pm in the afternoon, the set lunch menu offers a wide variety of items from which you select your choices. My wife and I plan to set a date to return as paying customers to try the set lunch soon.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
